There is an elephant in the room for family businesses

There is an elephant in the room for family businesses

I have been on holiday for a few days and this is my first post of September and frankly, to me, it is obvious that there is a huge Elephant in business right now!

This is the explanation in Wikipedia of the expression "elephant in the room" (usually "the elephant in the room") or "the elephant in the living room"[1][2] It is a metaphorical idiom in English for an important or enormous topic, question, or controversial issue that is obvious or that everyone knows about but no one mentions or wants to discuss because it makes at least some of them uncomfortable or is personally, socially, or politically embarrassing, controversial, inflammatory, or dangerous.

Being British has many advantages however our natural reserve at times can hold us back and I suspect this is one of those times…

Whether we like it or not (in my opinion) Covid19 is with us for a considerable period.

There I said it!

Well, that’s off my chest, so to speak...

However, for many in business, I am still hearing lots of people saying, ‘when things get back to normal’.
Business simply does not wait for anyone whether we like it or not.

The elephant in the room is CHANGE!

Very few of us like CHANGE.

Take our Family Business Practice. We have moved it to an online model, something we did very quickly, yet we still have some members who say ‘I don’t like that Zoom conference calling thing so I will wait until you get traditional meetings on the go again.’

So, what are they going to do, just not talk to people until it’s all back to their perceived normal?

CHANGE is the one constant in our life as no two seconds are ever the same.

So, to be blunt accept CHANGE, run with what we now face and embrace CHANGE. If you don’t you will join organisations like Woolworths who didn’t believe they needed to and look what happened to them. In our case, that means attending our online sessions if you have not done so far you will find them welcoming, time-efficient and at times surprisingly intimate and we would love to see you…

Go on you know you want to!

Until the next time…

Peter.
