I am lucky enough to live in a village and the view from my back garden is across open fields. At this time of year there is a lot of noise from starlings and sparrows, either squabbling together or hungry fledglings shouting for food.
However, a few minutes ago it went silent and very very still.
My instinct was to look up into the high, blue sky with the occasional fluffy white cloud and sure enough, a pair of Buzzards (which are Raptors) were circling gracefully overhead looking for lunch.
Buzzards have terrific eyesight, can see great distances, and have a very different view of the world to those of us down on the ground.
In fact, many cultures believe the buzzard spirit animal is a symbol of protection and defence. This bird flies into your life as a warning to protect yourself and your loved ones from imminent danger. It is the embodiment of adaptability in any good or bad situation. This spirit animal teaches us to get through anything that lies ahead of us in life.
What’s the point, Peter?
Right now, in an ever-changing business world, we need to be ADAPTABLE.
It may be that we had set out some very definite goals and targets for our family businesses at the start of the year. However, we can see that markets are changing so fast that those goals now look more than challenging.
Perhaps clients are spending less or even disappearing?
It can be hard to look past today.
Let's take a Raptors view of our business, not just at the day-to-day.
We need to look from a distance and view how we feel the land lies and ADAPT to our new situation, in many ways just as we did on the first lockdown over two years ago… (can you believe it's that long already?)
Nature has a habit of showing us the way if we let it – let us learn from a Buzzard and ADAPT.
The Family Business Practice is a vibrant learning and development community full of great people and businesses who in many cases give of their time and expertise to help others, PLUS do business together where appropriate!
